Afirma el historiador norteamericano Osear Handlin que la ciudad moderna es "esencialmente" distinta a sus predecesoras. En lenguaje metafórico, la diferencia radicaría en que la ciudad moderna dejó de ser un "organismo", para convertirse en un órgano, es decir, en una parte complejamente integrada a una estructura más amplia. En sentido estricto, la aparición de la ciudad moderna tuvo lugar -sigue Handlin- en la media centuria que siguió a la década de 1870 (Handlin, 1966,2-4).Citas
